Test Crestron & AMX code without the HAL DSP on your bench

This years-old blog article talked about testing your 3rd-party control system code using only the Halogen software. Here’s a video that steps through how to set up and use PuTTY software to monitor your PC’s IP Address, not the DSP. This lets you send and monitor Ethernet control messages to and from Halogen software – no hardware required.

Halogen 5.0’s FIR Filter Import DSP Block

FIR chainHalogen 5.0’s FIR Import DSP block is available to all four current HAL models.*  The FIR block permits importing finite impulse response (FIR) filter coefficients. To obtain the FIR coefficient’s file, either:

1) Download the applicable FIR file for the loudspeaker from the manufacture’s website – e.g., Fulcrum Acoustics, or

2) Generate the FIR coefficients from measured loudspeaker response data using the software packages that create FIR filters manually:

Does your DSP troubleshoot the cable installation?

Close up of electrician holding cable spoolHere’s a video showing how the Hardware Workspace in Rane’s Halogen software shows you exactly where bad cables are located. Both the HAL hardware and the Halogen software point you toward the exact problem. And you thought software couldn’t fix two cables that were swapped by the folks who pulled the cable for you…

He not someone dressed as a UPS driver for Halloween. It’s Rane’s first HAL4 and EXP7x products shipping. Included in the box, and on Rane’s website is Halogen 4.0 software that adds support for the Web Controls feature in any HAL ever shipped. A firmware update to existing HAL devices allows customizable web page creation within Halogen. Run the custom page(s) on any smartphone, tablet or computer’s web browser (yellow stickies optional).

Know HAL #2: Plug it in, it works! (Remember analog audio?)

Remember when you could plug in a live audio cable and immediately you’d hear sound? This was before you needed an IP Address, software, a mouse or (gasp!) the correct firmware in all your devices before you could hear music. We do.

HAL's DR & RAD devices - just like analog. Yet unlike any digital audio device you know.

HAL is Evolving (2013)

The significantly enhanced HAL1x Expansion Bus ships in the new EXP1x, EXP3x & EXP5x in April 2013. The new Bus supports daisy-chaining any combination of up to 32 EXPs, allows 512 x 512 audio channels, permits EXPs to be 100 meters (328 feet) apart, and supports unmanaged gigabit media converters (fiber) if EXPs need to be miles apart. This allows spreading HAL system audio and control I/O between distant equipment rooms in conference centers, campuses, classrooms, hotels, malls, arenas, sports centers, water parks, among others.

Tip: Running Multiple Versions of Halogen on One Computer

Don’t you wish your installers could run any and every version of the DSP control software needed, at any job site they encounter, new or old? And do so without uninstalling and reinstalling anything? We did too. This is why Halogen allows running any and every version – one at a time – on the same computer. HAL knows.Halogen Logo

To install the newest Halogen software, yet still allow a previous version of Halogen to run on the same computer, follow these instructions:
